Sigmund Companies, out of Washington, D.C., is looking to revitalize the strip mall.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In the future, a mural might greet customers picking up groceries, clothing and lunch at Broadway Shopping Center in North Knoxville.
Washington D.C.-based real estate development group Sigmund Companies now owns the complex and is looking to revitalize it by redesigning its facade, adding new businesses and hosting community events.
The shopping center, anchored by Kroger and containing stores like Save-A-Lot, Simply 10, Goodwill and Belew Drug, is a staple in North Knoxville.
Hoagies Sandwich Shop is slated to open on Monday, April 6, its owner said.
Owner Mike Scott grew up in the area, and said he remembers shopping at the center when stores like Big Lots and Woolworths were there. His grandmother also owned a sandwich shop in Knoxville, and he will offer steamed hoagies, hot dogs and more at his shop.
He's looking forward to a change in the shopping center, he said. "At one time, it was a super vibrant, busy all the time. But over the years, all that's faded, I'm not exactly sure why, but it has, and I'm excited to see it restored to its once glorious state," he said.
Wright Sigmund said his company had been eying the property for a while, and is excited about its proximity to downtown and the Happy Holler area.
He envisions a community space that's safe and clean, and said the company has revitalized business developments with good bones in the past.
"We feel like this should be a place that has best-in-class local merchants, some great regional people, and just a clean, safe place we can bring your family. and we know we can do that," he said.
Sigmund Companies shared renderings of the shopping center with 10News, which showed upgraded facades.
The renderings are not set in stone at this point, Sigmund said.
Staples in the shopping center, like Belew Drug, have been around for years.
Employee Carol Thomas said she wants to see the vibrancy return to the area.
"Full, we have a lot of empty spaces that I'd like to see full," she said.
She's hopeful the renovations will add to the community feel and all the things she loves about the area.
"I love the people, that's what's kept me here. From outside, I know almost every person in the shopping center, I know almost every single person that walks through this door," she said.
